26th September

Swallow: 40 birds headed north into the wind, before 9.00am.
House Martin: 10 birds flew south.
Linnet: 1 bird circled the open spaces at 8.30am.
Meadow Pipit: 30 birds flew in all directions prior to 9.00am.
Common Gull: 1 adult was on the open spaces, our first of the autumn.

Unfortunately I am off to the Isles of Scilly for a week, Hooray!
I look forward to seeing the birds that you have seen listed in the comments section when I return.

25th September

With the wind still not coming from a direction with an 'E' in we are struggling a little. We were surprised at the news of a Short-earded Owl flying SE over the Wetland Centre at 11.10am.

Short-eared Owl: While taking a chance to see if there was an visible migration over London from the top of Primrose Hill one was obsevered at 11.40am. The bird was to the east of the park drifting slowly away, though it didn't seem to know which way to go, it eventually disappeared from view at 11.50am.
House Martin: 140 birds flew mainly south in small flocks.
Swallow: 12o passed through.
Meadow Pipit: 45 passed overhead.
Grey Wagtail: 2 birds seen, 1 again in area 26.
Blackcap: 1 female in area 29.
Chiffchaff: 6 birds in areas 12, 25 and 29.
Chaffinch: 1's and 2's were seen heading west.
Teal: 1 flew out of area 26 at 2.30pm.

Wheatear: 1 was seen by The Hub at 5.30pm yesterday, only the third bird of the autumn.

23rd September

House Martin: 320 flew south prior to 9.30am.
Swallow: 170 south in small parties up to 12.00pm.
Meadow Pipit: 12 birds in 1's and 2's with the occasional bird landing.
Spotted Flycatcher: 1 flew south at 8.30am.
Chiffchaff: 2 in area 29.
Kingfisher: 2 birds in area 26.
Jackdaw: 2 birds flew east at 8.40am.

19th September

Lesser Whitethroat: 1 in Holly tree by the rose wheel, area 12 at 7.50am.
Blackcap: 3 singles in area 12, 25 and 29.
Chiffchaff: 12 birds in areas 12 and 29.
House Martin: 1 over the lake.
Meadow Pipit: a flock of 25 flew SW.
Egyptian Goose: 10 birds on the lake, where are these pests coming from?

18th September

Hobby: 2 singles; 1 spent about ten minutes over the park from 12.50pm, another flew high south at 1.05pm.
Meadow Pipit: 4 singles flew south.
Grey Wagtail: up to 2 birds feed by the nature study centre, area 1 around 8.00am.
Chiffchaff: 8 birds mainly in area 29.
Egyptian Goose: 7 birds were in area 26 for most of the day. These birds are not part of the waterfowl collection.

17th September


After a pleasant two days up in Norfolk where the winds were not ideal and the weather far to sunny I did manage some half decent sea watching. There was also several good birds on the broads.

Seawatching at Eccles by the Sea produced

1 Manx Shearwater
2 Pomarine Skuas
1 Long-tailed Skua
1 Arctic Skua
250+ Little Gulls
300+ Gannets
4 Black-throated Divers
8 Red-throated Divers
2 Puffins
100's of Razorbills and Guillemots

Rush Hill Scrape, Potter Heigham.

2 Pectoral Sandpipers ( 1 nearly caught by a Sparrowhawk)
1 Bittern in flight for 4 minutes
1 Common Crane

Regents Park

The weekend was very quiet with Jackdaw, 100+ Swallows 15th. Sunday was slightly better with 1 Common Whitethroat and a Tree Pipit.

13th September

Hobby: 1 flew south, and appeared to be eating a prey item at 12.50 pm.
Common Buzzard: 1 flew steadily eastwards at 1.00 pm.
Sparrowhawk: 4 birds were seen while we sky watched.
Swallow: 100 plus flew south in small groups.
House Martin: 6 birds over the lake.
Meadow Pipit: 2 birds landed on the open space, area 28 but were soon flushed.
Pied Wagtail: 7 birds fed around the Hub Sports Centre at 8.45am, area 28.
White Wagtail: 1 female fed alongside the wagtails.
Lesser Whitethroat: 2 birds fed in the brambles in area 29.
Blackcap: 3 in area 29.
Chiffchaff: 4 in area 29.

12th September

These two Grey Wagtails were in area 26. Three single birds were seen flying over, at this time of year there is a noticeable movement of this species.

Common Buzzard: 4 birds were seen between 12.55 pm and 1.05 pm. Three came together above the park, one of them departing to the SW. The other two birds headed off to the NE, one was seen to stoop at another bird.
Meadow Pipit: 1 flew SW.
Swallow: 38 birds in small groups headed mainly southish.
Sand Martin: 1 was with a group of Swallows.
Chiffchaff: 4 were seen while undertaking a bird survey in the Zoo.
Willow Warbler: 1 was in the Zoo.
Blackcap: 3 were in the Zoo.

11th September

Meadow Pipit: 1 bird flew SW, our first of the autumn.
Yellow Wagtail: 1 bird flew N at 8.20am.
House Martin: 50+ bird were above the lake at 7.00am.
Swallow: 6 birds flew N.
Chiffchaff: 7 birds were in with the tit flock. 4 birds showed well in amongst the roses in area 12.
Blackcap: 3 birds also showed well in the trees by the rose wheel, area 12.
Sparrowhawk: 2 singles.

Common Buzzard: 3 singles flew over heading NE at 12.35pm, 12.40pm and 1.50pm, the first two were probably moving together. This is turning out to be the best year on record for this species over the park. Mind you I could do with a different species of raptor.

8th September

Common Sandpiper: 1 was heard calling over the lake at 9.00am.
Lesser Whitethroat: 1 was in area 7, in the trees just inside the grounds of the Holme.
Spotted Flycatcher: 1 was by the rose wheel in Queen Mary's.
Chiffchaff: At least 12 birds were present.
Blackcap: 2 were in area 7 feeding on berries.
Swallow: 3 birds flew north.
House Martin: 7 birds were over the park at 11.00am.
Ring-necked Parakeet: 2 birds were seen in several areas.

7th September

A very quiet day in the park, with most migrants making good use of this settled weather and have moved on.

Chiffchaff: 4 birds in area 29.
Willow Warbler: 2 single birds in areas 16 and 29.
Blackcap: Singles in areas 16 and 29.
Grey Wagtail: 4 birds flew over.
Pied Wagtail: 2 birds over.
Sand Martin: 2 birds flew east at 7.05am.

Lunchtime sky watch.
Hobby: 1 tried to catch a House Martin at 11.45am, before flying off south.
Sparrowhawk: 3 sightings of 2 pairs + 2 singles.
Peregrine: 1 at 1.10 pm interacting with a male Sparrowhawk, before drifting off to the NW. This was followed 2 minutes later by another bird.
Common Buzzard: While watching the second Peregrine, Dave spotted this bird a lot higher up being hassled by the male Sparrowhawk, before eventually drifting off to the east at 1.25pm.
Swift: 1 over the lake.
Swallow: a light passage with at least 35 birds being seen.
House Martin: 4 over the lake.

6th September

Spotted Flycatchers in area 29.


Chiffchaff one of at least half a dozen in area 29.


Hobby: One flew south at a height that allowed us to see all the distinguishing features at 8.30am. It was also plucking a prey item as it went. We were surprised later when another bird circled just above the trees in area 29 at 9.30am.
Sparrowhawk: 4 birds over the park.
Kestrel: 1 seen catching dragonflies at mid-day.
Tree Pipit: 1 bird flew south at 7.15am.
Sand Martin: 2 birds flew SE at 7.50am.
Swallow: 55 birds were seen in small parties mainly heading south. They were flying at a very high altitude.
House Martin: 20 birds over the lake early morning.
Spotted Flycatcher: 2 birds were in area 29, in trees around the feeding station.
Chiffchaff: 15 birds were seen mainly between area 1 and 29, some were with a large tit flock.
Willow Warbler: 6 birds in the same location as the above.
Goldcrest: There seems to be an increase on the park residents that are now roaming with the tit flocks.

5th September

Swift: 3 sightings of a single bird in three areas of the park at different flying in different directions between 7.05 am and 8.50am.
Swallow: A small passage of birds noticed during the day with at least 60 birds flying in know particular direction.
House Martin: A major clear out with only 40 birds over the lake first thing and very few seen through the day.
Chiffchaff: 6 birds seen.
Willow Warbler: 1 bird seen in area 29.
Blackcap: Numbers were slightly up, with birds tacking in most areas of the park.

Birds seen during a lunchtime sky watch.
Hobby: 2 singles, one catching insects over Primrose Hill.
Peregrine: A possible very high flying bird headed west, occasionally disappearing into the clouds.
Sparrowhawk: 5 birds were seen.
Swallow: 35 birds heading in all directions, but mainly SW-W.
This was the second day that not one Cormorant was seen heading between the Lea Valley and the waters in SW London. They are normally a pain, as you think at first you have picked up something interesting, only to be dissapointed.

4th September

Common Buzzard; not one of todays but a similar view to the birds I scoped.


Common Buzzard: 4 birds flew NE at 2.00pm, the largest group ever recorded over the park.
Lesser Whitethroat: 1 in the area of Elm trees and Hawthorns in area 16.
Garden Warbler: 1 in the same area as the above species.
Common Whitethroat: 1 in area 29.
Blackcap: birds recorded in areas 16, 24 and 29.
Willow Warbler: 15 birds dotted about the park.
Chiffchaff: 20 birds about the park.
Swallow: 8 birds flew north.
House Martin: As many as 100 birds were in the air above the park at various times during the day.
Grey Wagtail: 1 flew over.
Little Grebe: A pair in area 2 have two recently hatched young.

Common Buzzard: 1 flew SW at 12.35pm.

Garden Warbler: 1 in area 24.
Common Whitethroat: 1 in area 24.

Spotted Fycatcher: 1 in area 29, hassled by Robins.
Yellow Wagtail: 1 flew over at 8.05am.
Grey Wagtail: 1 juvenile in area 29.

Willow Warbler: 6 birds mainly in areas 26 and 29.
Chiffchaff: 6 birds in the same locations as the above.

1st September

Whinchats in area 26.



Whinchat: 2 birds in the the rough grassland and wild flower patches in area 26.
Grey Wagtail: 3 birds flew north.
Willow Warbler: only a handful of birds seen.
Chiffchaff: 2 birds in area 26.
Kingfisher: 1 bird in area 25 and 26.
Egyptian Geese: 8 birds on the main lake.
