2nd August

Today was a bit of a red letter day. Dave and I had only just remarked that it was a shame that we no longer had a few Wood Warblers passing through on migration. We used to have singing males around 24/4 and the were almost guaranteed several gems passing through during the autumn. Then Bang! there on a dying Elm sucker was a sulphur breasted gem looking straight back at me.

Birds in and around the Cricket Pen,area 31.

Wood Warbler: While relocating the bird, which had moved into the large Sycamore by St Johns Lodge, area 30, we were astonished to see it chasing another bird. Both soon returned to the Cricket Pen and showed well until a Kestrel flew passed and spooked them at 12.20pm. During the afternoon as the temperature rose there was only one sighting at around 1.45pm.

Garden Warbler: at least two birds were feeding on berries or in the Silver Birch tree’s.

Common Whitethroat: three juveniles and two adults were seen.

Blackcap: four birds were feeding on berries.

Willow Warbler: twelve birds at least were in the area.

Chiffchaff: eight birds were here, including some really scruffy individuals.

Common Swift: a really tight ball of around 80 birds formed high above the area, though what caused them to do this passed by unseen.

Yellow Wagtail: one flew over area 18 at 12.20pm
