According to the weather forecasters today is the last good day of the week. I had to help with mapping trees in Richmond Park this morning. This gave the opportunity to check on the Heron’s on Pen Ponds. I didn’t get a chance to bird the park at all as I had to get back to Bushy by mid morning. I did see and hear a couple of birds.
Common Buzzard: A pair drifted south over Pen Ponds Plantation at 11.15am before catching a thermal and drifting back north. At one point the male boke away to chase off another bird.
Sparrowhawk: 2 single males, one of which displayed over the Isabella Plantation.
Peregrine: a male flew along the western edge of the park at 10.30am.
Great crested Grebe: the pair were feeding around the lake but not showing any sign of nesting.
Water Rail: one was calling from the Pen Ponds reed bed.
Bar-headed Goose: a male dropped in at around 10.45am.
Bushy Park
Common Buzzard: a pair were displaying over the Brewhouse Meadow at 1.40pm.
This was an unexpected visitor to Pen Ponds. Male Bar-headed Geese are a stunning smallish goose.

This was almost but not quiet to much to swallow.
