Birds seen in Norfolk during August
One lockdown was over we have been up and down to Norfolk as much as we could. The weather was kind to us with hardly any rain falling in the first 3 weeks and when it did rain it tended to be at night. The last week the remnants of an Atlantic storm gave us strong winds and heavy rain. There was a good number of Pied Flycatchers were scattered around the coast, unfortunately although I saw several they tended to be to distant, wader passage began and although water levels on the broads dropped Snipe's Marsh at Cley NWT Reserve once again was a good place to see the odd Wood and Green Sandpiper. When the winds did pick up I had an early morning visit to Cley produced Long-tailed Skua, several Arctics, Black Guillemot (could be last years bird returning as an adult). Unfortunately no shearwaters, a few days later on the front at Walcott I did manage 1 probably 2 Great Shearwaters and 1 Storm Petrel, ducks especially Teal were on the move along with them were a few Wigeon, C.Scoter, Red-breasted Merganser. Gannets were heading south in good numbers while slightly fewer headed back north into the wind. Sandwich, Common a few Arctics and 2 Roseate Terns were also close inshore, waders were in short supply Whimbrel were always seen along with the odd Grey Plover, Dunlin, Ringed Plover and Turnstone. On the 29th I was surprised to see terns and waders heading inland at Walcott not a direction I would have expected.
Below are images from those times away, nothing particularly rare or scarce but all good to see.
