9th September

Sorry for the gap in the sightings, I had the weekend in Norfolk. There it was fairly hot with a brisk SE wind on Saturday, that dropped to a very light SE on the Sunday. Passerines were thin on the ground though a couple of Barred Warblers put in an appearance. Sea watching in unfavourable winds produced 1 Long-tailed, 4 Pomarine, 8 Arctic and 5 Great Skuas, 2 Red Throated and 2 Black Throated Divers, Guillemots and Razorbills, hundreds of Gannets. The star bird that gave great views as it flew along the shore at Cley was a Grey Phalarope.

Whinchat: 1 on area 26 in the wild flower beds.
Spotted Flycatcher: 3 in area 15.
Sedge Warbler: 3 birds in the reed beds at the end of the island, area 26

Norfolk sounded like a good weekend. Saw my first whinchat at Dagenham Chase on Saturday, and I identified a lesser whitethroat by it's yellowhammer-like song.
How early is the park's earliest fieldfare??
Debbie
Hi Debbie.
I have only been to Dagenham Chase once, that was to see a Pine Bunting.
East London north or south of the river are not ares I would go to unless their was something really interesting. I like my car to stay in one piece. The first Fieldfare if you look on my web site at first and last dates of winter visitors the 15/9 is the ealiest. Normally though you would have to wait for a SE wind and normally a nip in the air to see them. If that combination happens it is well worth gettin in the park before work, the experience is well worth it.
