What a great day, with what must rank as the best bird I have ever seen in the park.
Stone Curlew: 1 flew about 60ft above the open spaces. It gave spectacular views as it flew past Dave J and myself. Dave had noticed the bird first, and as we trained our binoculars on the bird we expected to see a possible Whimbrel. How wrong we were, the unmistakable black and white markings on the wings made identification simple.
We both called out Stone Curlew in unison. We then watched as the bird flew very slowly over the zoo and on towards Hampstead Heath. Where another observer saw it fly past heading east.
Turtle Dove: 1 flew low over the open spaces at 8.47am. As this species becomes harder to see in the country side, in the park they have become less than annual visitors.
Collared Dove: 1 flew over the zoo at 12.50pm.
Reed Binting: 1 pair in area 2.
Swallow: 3 birds flew north.
House Martin: 8 birds over the lake.
