22nd: 2 flights of c12-16 House Martins over Camden Lock heading South.
24th, 1500: 1 Hobby darting after a couple of hirundines over Camden Lock. Another for my "patch list"...
Hobby's seem to be more plentiful this year, are they local birds?

Strange, but the Herts Birders thought that with the rain etc earlier this year, there were fewer dragonflies, and so fewer Hobbies... But over the past 1-2 months, I think that I've seen more and more dragonflies all over the shop, and have seen more Hobbies than I've ever seen (although this does include sightings in Dorset, Herts, etc).

Are there more, or are we all just looking harder, so seeing more? I'm a great believer in the latter theory. There are so many areas in London that are incredibly under-watched, and I have to believe that there are more than a few pairs breeding even in Central London.
I think the chances of a Hobby nesting undetected certainly within Central London are pretty slim.
We had a report several years ago of a pair breeding close to West Hampstead tube station. We checked several times and a local birder who lived nearby also checked, but we did not even see a bird. Possibly the original observer mis-identified a small bird of prey.
As you mention there dose seem to be quite a few dragonflies around at the moment. We have seen several of the Hobby's that have flown over the park catching what we take to be dragonflies.
I do agree that in general most species of insect, certainly within the park seem to have been badly affected by the wet spring.
