27th September

While visiting Hyde Park yesterday to rescue a Heron trapped under some netting Dave had fantastic views of a juvenile Little Gull. He didn’t have any binoculars but for the gull he didn’t need them. The trouble was that at the other end of the Serpentine he was sure that there was a marsh tern species. He however didn’t have time to go and ID the bird. This bird had played on his mind overnight, so as we had to check the area where the Heron had been trapped we popped down there at 8.30am. There had been know news of the Little Gull so we were not expecting to see anything. Dave soon spotted the tern on the other side of the lake opposite the Lido. I said that it looked like a White-winged Black Tern to me, Dave agreed. Soon we were having superb views as the bird hawked insects right in front of us. We put the news out and hoped that other Londonbirders would come and enjoy it. Popping back after work we were pleased to see that it had attracted a string of admirers.

The first record for inner London, apparently!
Hi Stuart.

I cannot claim to have had one of these in the park.
