18 Apr:
8 Little Grebe (3pr), 4 Great Crested Grebe (2pr: 1 nesting Heron Is area 8, 1 displaying E of Clarence Bridge a.11), 1 dead ad Tawny Owl nr Leaf Yard Wood a.40, 1 Swallow NW, 3 Chiffchaff, 20 Willow Warbler (more than double yesterday's total), 7 Blackcap, 5 Siskin (Cricket Pen a.32 then N), 1 Linnet over 06:10, 1 Lesser Redpoll W 06:05. (I have no trouble separating the latter's flight call from the Mealy's, which is the 'common' redpoll in Canada.)

The poor owl may have been hit by a car, then finished off by a fox - Dave saw this happen several years ago in the same spot; no word yet on Queen Mary's Gardens pr that bred last yr.

On a happier note, at least one Mistle Thrush nestling in area 43 is about to fledge; however, there's a crow's nest just above - I'm crossing my fingers!
