Squirrel and parakeet proof feeders In Regent's Park we have several areas where hanging bird feeders have erected. The feeding station in the Cricket Pen area 31 is well used by a variety of typical parkland birds and offers good views to the public. We battled for many years to prevent firstly the grey squirrels and then in the 90's the parakeets from using them. The squirrels often damage the feeders and aren't a species you should encourage into a garden especially if you have hedge nesting birds. The parakeets tend to monopolise them and when not eating will sit close by, thus deterring other birds from using them. Over the years I have tried many feeders from various companies, some work, others have failed miserably. At the moment suppliers, well not that I am a ware of haven't come up with a feeder that excludes these green pests but allows woodpeckers and Nuthatches to feed. The last 5 days in Regent's Park

Regent's Park, the last 6 days. Monday Red Kite: 3 birds drifted southwards around 11.30am 12th, Tuesday This was a very good day in the park. Tree Pipit: one landed briefly on a tree by area 39. Northern Wheatear: five birds were on the cricket squares area 37 for most of the day. Common Redstart: 2 males were in the Chat Enclosure, area 39 and a female was on the eastern side of the shrubbery by Ready Money Fountain, area 28. Lesser Whitethroat: one was also in the shrubbery east of the Ready Money Fountain, area 28. Wednesday Sedge Warbler: one was singing from the reed bed in area 5 and was still present 16th. Northern Wheatear: a female was on the sports pitches in area 24. Common Buzzard: one headed south east. Brambling: this was a great and surprising find by 2 birders taking an evening stroll.
