29th January


Hawfinch: 2 birds flew over the Leaf Yard Wood, area 29 at 1.30pm.
Tawny Owl: The male was calling from the trees in area 2 at 6.30am. Later it was back at one of his roost sites in area 29.
Ring-necked Parakeet: 1 bird moving between areas 1 and 24.

26th January
















Water Rail: Still present in area 2, showed well now that the ice in the ditch has thawed out.
Common Teal: 3 feeding with the collection birds in area 1, before returning to the main lake.
Red crested Pochard: 32 flew out of area 26.
Kestrel: 3 birds flew north, and the pair were displaying in area 24.
Stock Dove: 19 birds fed in garden by St Marks Bridge. Posted by Picasa

Winter in the park for a few hours at least.



Tawny Owl: Male roosting in area 29.
Brambling: A female flew west over area 25 at 8.20am.
Redwing: 1 or 2 birds were seen in area 2 and 25.
Shoveler: 16 birds were present.
Common Teal: A pair were in area 5.
Ruddy Duck: 12 birds were on the lake.

22nd January

Water Rail: Still present.
Redwing: 7 singles flew west before 9.00am.
Common Pheasant: The male was seen in area 9 this morning.
Little Grebe: 2 birds were on the lake.

20th January

Water Rail: 1 still present in area 2.
Yellow-legged Gull: 1 adult on a post in the lake.
R N Parakeets: 3 of the ****** things now. They must like the food here.
Sparrowhawk: 2 females, 1 eating pigeon in area 25 at 11.30am and another sitting by the feeding station in area 29.

Water Rail: Stil present in area 2, showed well between 11.00am and 12.30pm.
Yellow-legged Gull: 1ad present with the dawn gathering of Herring Gulls in area 28.
Goldfinch: 8 birds on feeders in area 24.
Redwing: 4 birds flew NW at 8.10am.
Blackcap: 1f was present in area 29 yesterday. Posted by Picasa

Little Owl: One bird was seen in the southern half of the park. Its exact location is being kept a secret, as not to disturb the bird or birds.
Kestrel: One pair displaying over area 24.
Great crested Grebe: 6 birds on the lake.
Gadwall: 12 birds on the main lake.

Redwing: 6 birds were in trees in area 26 at 8.00am.
Teal: 1 drake and 2 females were on the sheltered side of area 5.

9th January


Water Rail: Still present.
House Sparrow: 1m on feeder in garden by St Marks Bridge, area 34.
Stock Dove: 16 birds feeding in garden in area 34.
Great spotted Woodpecker: 2m drumming, 1 on ash tree at the north end of area 6, the other in area 24 and 26.
Green Woodpecker: 2m in areas 1 and 25.
Kingfisher: 1 seen fishing in area 25.

8th January

Water Rail: Still present is area 2.
Blackcap: 2 singles; 1 in Queen Mary's on the Mediterranean border, area 12ish.
Common Teal: 3 birds(2f, 1m) by the island area 5 viewed from grass by the bandstand.
R N Parakeet: 2 birds still in and around area 24.
Tawny Owl: The bird again roosting just inside the fence in area 29.

Water Rail: The bird is still present in area 2.
Gadwall: 4 birds on the main lake.
Shoveler: 6 birds on the lake.

Water Rail: The bird showed well around lunchtime in area 2.
Redwing: 12 birds flew west at 8.00am, other birds were heard calling from inside the grounds of the Holme, area 7.
Goldfinch: The small charm are still present in and around areas 24 and 25.
Ring-necked Parakeet: 1 bird was seen in area 24.
Tawny Owl: 1 bird roosting in ivy in area 29.
Great crested Grebe: One pair are almost in summer plumage and have been attacking one of the other winter plumaged birds.
Grey Heron: 22 nest had birds defending them. Some birds will probably have laid eggs already due to the mild weather. Posted by Picasa

Goldfinches on feeder in area 24


Water Rail: Seemed to be more elusive today, only seen twice.
Egyptian Geese: The pair still present mainly in area 26.
Shoveler: 12 birds commuting between area 1 and 5.
Common Teal: 1 drake with the above birds on the main lake when flushed from area 1.
Gadwall: 10 birds on the main lake.
Ruddy Duck: 9 birds on the main lake.
Mandarin Duck: 14 birds hiding around the edges of the islands on the main lake.
Ring-necked Parakeet: 2 birds on feeders in area 24.
Goldfich: 8 birds on feeders in area 24 sometimes visiting areas 1 and 25. Posted by Picasa

2nd January

Common Buzzard: 1 drifted slowly north-eastwards at 11.15am.
Water Rail: Still present in area 2 showing well for long periods.
Goldfinch: 7 birds on the feeders in area 24.
R N Parakeet: 2 birds again on feeders in area 24.
Common Pheasant: The cock bird was in Queen Mary's Gardens during the afternoon.

1st January


Water Rail: The bird is still present in the reed bed in area 2.
Ring-necked Parakeet: 2 birds have been present on feeders in area 24. These birds are most unwelcome, as they could cause the decline of hole nesting species ie; Great Spotted Woodpecker.
Goldfinch: 6 birds feeding on and around the feeders in area 24 and 25.
